Artificial intelligence cites you when it recognizes you as a clear, consistent, verifiable entity across the places it crosses to build its answer. It doesn’t cite you for having many links or for ranking first in a search engine. It cites you for three things almost no one is working on: entity authority, triangulated presence, and mention frequency.

Why does the AI cite some people and not others?
The machine doesn’t choose by popularity. It chooses by relevance, by consistency, and by earned authority. One figure makes it clear: only 12% of what the AI cites is in Google’s top 10, as Ahrefs measured in 2025. Ranking high in search and being cited by the AI are two different games, and most people are still playing the first one.
What is entity authority, and why does it weigh more than a backlink?
An entity is what the machine understands you to be: your name, what you do, what you’re an authority on. When that entity is clear and repeats the same way everywhere, the AI can cite it with confidence. When it’s blurry or contradictory, the AI would rather not name you. A backlink moves your position on Google; entity clarity moves whether the machine recognizes you.
What do the people the AI cites have in common?
They show up the same way in several places. That is triangulated presence: your topic and your work stated consistently where the machine can cross-check and confirm them. When that presence holds, the machine treats you as recognized authority. A stray mention doesn’t build a source. Many consistent mentions do. That’s why posting a lot on a single channel doesn’t make you citable: the machine needs to confirm you from several sides.
