Why do people search my name more but visit my website less?

Because who answers changed. People still ask about your name and your topic, but they no longer go out to find your work: they keep what the machine answers. Out of every 100 searches on Google, only 23 end in a visit to a website. The other 77 are resolved without anyone leaving for any site, according to 2026 SparkToro data.

This is called the Great Decoupling: search-engine use rises while clicks to websites fall.

What exactly changed?

Your website used to be the door. Someone searched for you, landed on your site, and got to know you there. Today your site is no longer where people get to know you, it’s where they confirm you. The first version of you is the one the AI gives, in its answer, with or without your name. Your site comes after, if at all, to verify.

Does that mean my website is useless now?

It works, but its job changed. It stopped being the destination and became the material the machine learns from. A well-built website is still necessary, not to receive visits, but so the AI has somewhere to draw you from when it answers. The mistake is to keep measuring it by traffic.

What metric replaces traffic?

The citation. The question is no longer how many people entered your site, but how many times the AI named you when someone asked about your topic. Anyone still looking only at traffic is reading the wrong board.

This is the shift that reorders everything else: the recommendation is no longer made by a person, it’s made by a machine. That’s why the new game is being the source the AI cites, not attracting visits.
